Photon and Graviton Mass Limits

چکیده
Efforts to place limits on deviations from canonical formulations of electromagnetism and gravity have probed length scales increasing dramatically over time. Historically, these formulations have passed through three stages: (1) Testing the power in the inverse-square laws of Newton and Coulomb, (2) Seeking a nonzero value for the rest mass of photon or graviton, (3) Considering more degrees of freedom, allowing mass while preserving explicit gauge or general-coordinate invariance. Since our previous review the lower limit on the photon Compton wavelength has improved by four orders of magnitude, to about one astronomical unit, and rapid current progress in astronomy makes further advance likely. For gravity there have been vigorous debates about even the concept of graviton rest mass. Meanwhile there are striking observations of astronomical motions that do not fit Einstein gravity with visible sources. “Dark matter” (invisible classical particles) fits well at large scales. “Modified Newtonian dynamics” provides the best phenomenology at galactic scales. Satisfying this phenomenology is a requirement if dark matter, perhaps as invisible classical fields, could be correct here too. “Dark energy” might be explained by a graviton-mass-like effect, with associated Compton wavelength comparable to the radius of the visible universe. We summarize significant mass limits in a table.

Mixing of the photon with low-mass particles.
Fhotons can mix with low-mass bosons in the presence of external electromagnetic fields if these particles —not necessarily of spin 1—couple by a two-photon vertex. Important examples are the hypothetical axion (spin 0) and graviton (spin 2). We develop a formalism which is adapted to study the evolution of a photon (axion, graviton) beam in the presence of external fields. We apply our results...
متن کاملProduction of a Z boson and photon via a Randall-Sundrum-type graviton at the Large Hadron Collider
In extra dimensional models with Kaluza-Klein graviton states that are well separated in mass, such states may be observed as resonances in collider experiments. We extend previous works on such scenarios by considering the one-loop resonant production of a Z boson in association with a photon. We find the production rate to be negligible in conservative scenarios, and small for reasonable lumi...
متن کاملSearch for Randall-Sundrum Gravitons in the Diphoton Channel at CDF
We report on a search for new particles in the diphoton channel using a data sample of 5.4 fb−1 of pp̄ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum gravito...
